How to Import & Use LUTs in Davinci Resolve
FollowThis guide is for users new to DaVinci Resolve, or new to using custom LUTs. If you already have a LUTs folder set up in DaVinci, you can simply unzip your new Luxe LUTs, and place them in that folder with your other custom LUTs!
Prep your files!
You should have received a download link via email. From this page, simply click to download your LUTs.
If you purchased a single collection, you'll find one download link for the CUBE format LUTs:
If you purchased the bundle, you'll find multiple links for the CUBE format LUTs:
Once downloaded, unzip/extract the file(s). If on Mac, Safari may unzip the files for you! Inside the unzipped folder, you'll find another folder with the collection name:
You'll want to move these inner folders from downloads to a good place on your computer that you can quickly access from within Davinci. I recommend creating a dedicated LUTs folder for DaVinci Resolve.
I named my new folder "Luxe LUTs" and stored it the same drive where I keep all my Davinci assets and projects. Inside this folder, I dragged and dropped the folders for each of my Luxe LUTs collections:
Just inside each collection folder, you should see the unzipped CUBE format LUTs:
Show DaVinci where to find your LUTs!
LUTs must be loaded into DaVinci Resolve for you to be able to use them to grade your clips. LUTs can be imported from any location on a system. Therefore, you must point DaVinci Resolve to the location of your custom LUT folders (in my case, my newly created "Luxe LUTs" folder.
You can choose to install a LUT into the default LUT folder or simply choose a LUT folder to load in the System Preferences.
In the top left of the interface, select DaVinci Resolve > Preferences
Within the System Preferences, choose the General option
In the LUT Locations section, click the Add button in the bottom left corner:
Select the folder where you saved your unzipped Luxe LUTs:
With your LUTS folder selected, choose "Select Folder" and the LUT folder will be added to the LUT Locations. (NOTE The file path depends on where you have saved your unzipped files.)
Click Save in the bottom right corner of the System Preferences window.
New LUTs may not appear straight away since the file path to the LUT may need to be refreshed.
Make sure you are on the Color tab, to view and apply LUTs:
Right-click the LUTs folder in the folder window and choose Refresh. Your LUTs folder will appear with your new Luxe LUTs inside:
Now to apply your LUTs!
If you haven't opened any footage, or added any clips to your timeline yet. You'll need to do so before you can test out any of your new LUTs.
Select the node you'd like to color grade from your timeline:
In the LUTs folder, select your desired Luxe LUTs collection to view LUTs. Hover over options to preview each option and double-click to apply:
You can also right-click your desired option and select "Apply LUT to Current Node" to apply:
What to consider
LUTs are designed to convert the color pixel data of your content to achieve a specific "look" or grade. In short, they map colors to different colors. However, they do not auto-detect or adjust for the white balance, exposure, contrast, or other variable factors that may affect the overall look and feel of your content. These are things we recommend learning how to adjust prior to applying LUTs. LUTs are considered destructive as they will transform the color space of your footage, thus, many users would recommend making corrective and standardizing changes to your nodes prior to grading with a desired creative/stylistic LUT.
